Music News – Aug. 31, 2017

The upcoming Labor Day weekend is the official end of summer blowout for our city. Thanks to Hurricane Harvey, our holiday weekend almost didn’t happen. The massive storm caused a lot of havoc across our great state, including loss of life and property. I’ve always felt like Rockport was our sister city and we visited it as often as possible. I truly hate to see such a beautiful town suffer that much destruction. Here in our area, Harvey caused little actual property damage but did cause many cancellations of concerts, both outdoors and indoors. The Gary Allan concert scheduled for last Saturday at Whitewater Amphitheatre was postponed until October 20. The Lyle Lovett concert at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio last Friday night was rescheduled for last night, August 30. The Clint Black concert scheduled for last Sunday at the Tobin Center was rescheduled for December 6. We definitely were spared the full force of the storm that many cities south of us did not. We should all say a pray and thank God for our good fortune.

Musicians are often the first to step up when it comes to organizing benefits for the people affected by Harvey. Tonight at Antone’s Club in Austin, blues singer Guy Forsyth was quick to donate the full proceeds of his show to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. His pal Carolyn Wonderland will join him tonight as his special guest. She is originally from Houston, so she knows a thing or two about the damage a hurricane can do. If you happen to be in Austin tonight, check out these amazing musicians. The money raised will be for a good cause.

Closer to home, Billy Joe Shaver was forced to postpone his show last Saturday night at Riley’s Tavern because of the impending bad weather. Riley’s owner Joel Hofmann spoke with Shaver about a make-up date and luckily they have settled on not one but two shows, this Friday and Saturday at Riley’s Tavern. As I mentioned earlier, musicians always seem to step up when it comes to hosting benefits for those in need. Shaver’s two night stand at Riley’s will be called ‘Sunshine After The Rain’ and proceeds will also be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Joining Shaver will be the Joel Hofmann Band, Kimberly Kelly, Big John Mills, Halleyanna Finlay, Mark Jungers, Chris Fullerton, Tommy Alverson and many more guests to be announced later. BBQ plates, raffles and drawings will be available on both days. Friday’s show will begin at 8pm and Saturday’s event will start at 2pm. For tickets and info, see

Bandera’s Charlie Robison was one of the first musicians to offer help over the weekend. He was posting messages on Facebook about loading up water, generators and other supplies and heading toward the coastal area. Robison owns a large fishing boat and spends a lot of time in the Rockport and Port Aransas area. Charlie and his brother Bruce are playing at Gruene Hall this weekend. Bruce Robison and his Back Porch Band kick things off on Friday night. This will be his first appearance at Gruene Hall since he got sick back in May. He was forced to bow out of his appearance at the Americana Music Jam because he was in the hospital. Bruce is better now and ready to play new songs from his recent self-titled album. Charlie will perform two nights, starting Saturday with fellow Americana artist Kody West opening both shows. Come out early on Sunday to catch the amazing Peterson Brothers free show at noon. More info on the weekend and to purchase tickets, see

Krause’s Café has a great line-up of live music in store for the Labor Day weekend, starting tonight with the polka sounds of Yodel Blitz at 8pm. The newly reformed Hipsonic plays at 8pm on Saturday and the dynamic Yesenia McNett brings her ace band the Groove Doctors to the Krause biergarten stage on Sunday night at 8pm. Chad Boyd finishes up the music with a show at 2pm on Monday.

There’s many more incredible live music happening this weekend, like guitar slinger Ruben V on Friday night at Brookshire Brothers in Canyon Lake. Don’t forget, it’s their steak night on Friday so in addition to fantastic music you can enjoy a tasty grilled steak dinner too. On Saturday night, go see Ben Haggard at Conway’s Dancehall. Ben is Merle’s son and will be joined by his father’s road band, The Strangers for this very special show. On Sunday, check out our own Noah Vonne at Faust Brewery at 4pm. Noah’s fronted several band’s in New Braunfels and is now focusing on her solo career.
