Music News – August 8, 2013

It always amuses me when I read articles about Texas and they mention that Austin is considered the live music capital of America. Obviously they haven’t visited New Braunfels lately. For example, here’s a recap of the live music that took place right here in our fine city just last week. It started on Wednesday at Tavern in the Gruene when Ray Wylie Hubbard joined Crow Black Chicken, a rocking blues band from Dublin, Ireland. It was one of those magic nights when the music took the band and the audience into uncharted territory. Over at Billy’s Ice on Thursday night, Zack Walther’s band were joined by guitar slinger Austin Gilliam for a few tunes and they had the place rocking like a hurricane. Junior Brown brought his guit-steel magic to Gruene Hall on Friday night and the music was truly hotter than the weather if you can believe that. The Groove Hounds opened for Vallejo on Saturday night at the Phoenix Saloon. Both bands were on fire for sure but things got intense when the Vallejo boys invited Kori Free onstage for an extended jam. The point here is that fantastic live music is happening every night of the week, right here in your hometown, so get out of the house and go check it out.

One of my favorite local bands was a short lived group called Fast Betty, formed a few years ago by local guitarist Austin Garrett. It was a hard rocking power trio that seemed set to forge a brave new rock and roll path in the heart of Americana country. As musicians often do, Garrett took a job with another band and hit the road, leaving Fast Betty on hold. Well, as luck would have it, he returned home and fired up Fast Betty again. They will play their first show next Tuesday at River Road Ice House, starting at 8pm. Garrett is also inviting any classic car collectors to bring their cool rides out to the show. Reserved parking will be available for any classic cars that show up. Miles Stone will be on drums and Bob Driver will handle bass duties. The CD/EP has been digitally released on all major online sources, including Amazon and iTunes. Cool cars, rock and roll music and no cover charge, sounds good to me.

The triple digit heat wave seems to be stuck here for awhile so dress in cool comfy clothes, drink lots of water and head out to Whitewater Amphitheater this Saturday night to catch the Josh Abbott Band. Aaron Watson will be opening the show and a few general admission tickets are still available. Abbott’s latest CD, ‘Small Town Family Dream,’ has been at the top of the iTunes Country Chart and No. 2 on the iTunes All Genre Chart. Since 2011, they have sold over 400,000 concert tickets, and something tells me they are just getting warmed up. Go to whitewaterrocks.com for a schedule and to purchase tickets.

Gruene Hall has a double barreled blast of Texas music on tap for Friday night, starting with John David Kent opening for Granger Smith. Kent will release his new CD, ‘Before The Sun Comes Up,’ next week. The first single, ‘Until We Turn Around,’ was released in July and is perched on the Texas music charts. Kent was previously a member of the rock band Radish before he decided to launch his solo career. Granger Smith is currently touring in support of his ninth album, ‘Dirt Road Driveway,’ that was released in April. The album debuted at #1 on the iTunes Country Charts and is his best selling CD of his career. He also launched a country boy alter-ego named Earl Dibbles Jr., a character that pokes good natured fun at rednecks. Attend this show and you get three artists for the price of two. Tickets are just $10 at the door.

Speaking of Gruene Hall, by the time you read this, tickets for the Lisa Marie Presley show scheduled for September 13 may already be sold out. They went on sale a few days ago, with general admission tickets priced at $30 and VIP tickets priced at $130. See gruenehall.com for more info or call (830) 629-5077.
