Music News – Dec. 13, 2018

As December comes to an end, it will mark the final days of the year 2018. This year, New Years Eve will fall on a Monday night. If you plan on spending the evening at a local venue, you may want to firm up those plans now before they sell out. Cheatham Street Warehouse has the David Prado Band on tap to help ring in the New Year. Over at Conway’s Dance Hall you can welcome 2019 with Shane Smith & the Saints. Jamie Lin Wilson and American Aquarium will ring in the New Year at Gruene Hall. Down the road in Luckenbach you can dance away 2018 with the Almost Patsy Cline Band. The Phoenix Saloon will host a rocking Tom Petty tribute with Highway Hypnosis. The Pour Haus has Natalie Rose on schedule for December 31. River Road Icehouse has a great show featuring Copper Chief on tap for their end of year bash. Stewart Mann & Statesboro Revue will host their 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve party at Tavern in the Gruene. Last but not least, Knotty Grove will be blasting out classic rock at the Watering Hole Saloon for their New Year’s Eve show.

New Album by George Strait

Last week George Strait finished playing his 19th concert at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After retiring from the road in 2014, Strait has been performing six shows per year in Vegas. In 2019 he will continue this pattern with performances in February, August and December. These recent shows were his first since longtime drummer Mike Kennedy was killed in a car wreck on August 31. New drummer Lonnie Wilson was hired for these shows and has played with such stars as Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood. Strait’s two hour set included old hits plus three new songs, including Codigo, his song about his favorite tequila, which he is part owner. The other new songs are Every Little Honky Tonk Bar and God & Country Music. Both will be on his new album, Honky Tonk Time Machine, set for release in 2019. George will play a rare Texas show at Dickies Arena in Ft. Worth on November 22. All 14,000 tickets for the show sold-out in just a few hours and now scalpers are asking over $2000 for even the bad seats. Strait will take part in a special tribute to Willie Nelson on January 12 in Nashville along with Lee Ann Womack, Lyle Lovett, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, John Mellencamp, Alison Kraus and Kris Kristofferson. He’s called King George for a reason, since he’s the only singer in the history of recorded music to have 60 Number 1 songs in his career, and he’s still releasing new music. Keep up with King George at

Bruce Springsteen on Broadway

This weekend, Bruce Springsteen will end his long running Broadway show that debuted on October 3, 2017. It will close on Saturday December 15 after 236 performances. In a rare change of habit, Bruce kept the set list intact for all performances. On the nights that his wife Patti Scailfa was unable to join him, he would take out Tougher Than The Rest and Brilliant Disguise and replace them with Long Time Coming and Ghost of Tom Joad. Two shows were filmed back in July and will be streaming on Netflix starting Sunday. On Friday, a soundtrack recording of the show will be available on CBS Records.

Jay Bleu Debut CD

Jay Wimberley, or Jay Bleu, as he’s known around town, has just released his self-titled debut CD. He will be premiering songs from the album tomorrow night at Tavern in the Gruene at 9pm. The album was recorded at Cibolo Studios in San Antonio with engineers James Campbell and Grammy winner Chet Hymes. Jay invited Aris Pouncey to play bass, Landis Chisenhall on drums and he all vocals and guitars. All songs were written by Jay and cover blues, rock and touches of jazz. It’s a very tasteful collection of songs that will remind you of the best work by John Mayer and Steve Miller, both are big influences of Jay’s. For his live show at Tavern, Aris will join Jay on guitar, Landis will handle drums and Mark Greenberg will play bass. Fans of guitar based classic rock of the 1970’s will enjoy this album as much as I have. You can purchase copies of the new CD at Jay’s shows or at
