Music News – Dec. 27, 2018

Last week I listed all the New Year’s Eve shows so if you are planning on celebrating the end of 2018 out on the town, you might want to check with the venue first to be sure they aren’t sold-out or to reserve a spot for you and your friends. Most venues will have a cover charge because bands usually cost more to play on New Year’s Eve. Some venues will offer snacks and party favors during the night in addition to the live music. Since New Year’s Eve falls on a Monday night, venues will have to celebrate the new year before midnight to comply with TABC rules. Always party responsibly, be safe on the drive home and be sure to have a designated driver. I’m sure the taxi and Uber drivers will be very busy on Monday night. See the concert listing on this page for a full schedule of events for New Year’s Eve.

Top Albums from Texas Artists in 2018

Since December is the last month of the year, there’s hundreds of lists naming the best movies, TV shows, books and albums of the year. I love to read them all but rarely agree with their picks, especially when it comes to the best music released this year. There’s always more rap and pop music on their lists, while mine has more Texas artists and classic rock on it. Many Texas artists released strong albums this year, like Cody Jinks new CD Lifers, Solid Ground by Wade Bowen and Whiskey & Pride by Cory Morrow. Willie Nelson released My Way, his tribute to Frank Sinatra and his son Lukas issued a self-titled album with his band Promise of the Real. Three Texas gals all had hit albums in 2018. Of course I’m talking about Kelly Willis, Bri Bagwell and Kacey Musgraves. Golden Hour by Musgraves was named the Top album of 2018 by many publications, including Rolling Stone and Billboard Magazine. Super gal group Pistol Annies, made up of Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe, released Interstate Gospel. It also appeared on many year-end best of lists and rightly so because it’s the best collection of songs they have written since forming in 2011. Of course, Miranda is a Texas gal, which makes Ashley and Angaleena honorary Texans.

More Top Albums Released in 2018

Though it may be hard to believe, good music can come from a state other than Texas. It’s no coincidence that Texas and Tennessee are the only two states in America that start with the letter T. Some of the best music in the world comes from these two states. This year Nashville gave us these fantastic albums: Chris Stapleton – From a Room Vol. 2; Jason Isbell – Nashville Sound; Tyler Childers – Purgatory; Will Hoge – My American Dream; Dan Auerbach – Waiting on a Song; Sam Morrow – Concrete & Mud; Brandi Carlile – By The Way I Forgive You; and Eric Church – Desperate Man. Church’s album has a Texas connection since Ray Wylie Hubbard helped him write the title song. A couple of veteran songwriters, John Prine and Bob Dylan, were back on the charts in 2018. Prine for Tree of Forgiveness, his first new album in twelve years. Dylan issued a 6-CD set containing all the outtakes from his classic 1975 album, Blood on the Tracks.

Musicians We Lost, Musicians That Are Retiring

We lost a few musicians this year, including the iconic Aretha Franklin and country superstar Roy Clark. We also said goodbye to Marty Balin, a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, Tony Joe White, songwriter of many hits like Polk Salad Annie and Ed King, guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd. King wrote the famous guitar intro for their smash hit Sweet Home Alabama. Several older musicians announced their retirement tours in 2018 including Bob Seger, Kiss, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Joan Baez, Paul Simon and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Last Chance for Local Live Music in 2018

There’s plenty of fantastic live music in the area to keep everyone entertained while we wait for the big night to arrive. Kevin Fowler is at Gruene Hall tonight with Los Texmaniacs opening the show. Fowler has a new single, Country Song to Sing, scheduled for a January release and chances are good he will premier it tonight. The Craze will take the stage on Friday night at 9pm at the Phoenix Saloon. Lonesome Dave Fisher will be at Riley’s Tavern on Saturday night and Dallas Burrow will be at Middleton Brewing on Sunday at 2pm. Skylar Hamilton will be at the Pour Haus stage at 8:30pm on Sunday night. Happy New Year!
