Music News – Dec. 6, 2018

Kent Finlay’s influence is still being felt today. As owner of Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, many young musicians sought him out for advice. One in particular was Randy Rogers, an up and coming singer songwriter that was a regular at his Wednesday songwriter nights. Fast forward several years and Rogers signs his first major record label contract on the bar at the historic venue. After Finlay passed away, Rogers purchased the place to help preserve its fabled legacy. On Sunday night, December 9, at Seekatz Opera House, Randy will perform an intimate acoustic night of songs and stories. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Texas State University for the Kent Finlay Endowment in the Center for Texas Music History. To purchase tickets, go to rrbtour.live/Seekatz. At press time there were a few tickets left for the pre-show meal at Krause’s Café. Doors at Seekatz Opera House will open at 8pm and the show will start at 8:30pm. Randy is a local guy who knows what it means to be a part of our city and to give back to our community. Don’t miss this chance to see him in a rare acoustic setting.

Holiday Gift Ideas

As the holidays are quickly approaching, getting that perfect gift for friends and family can be a real challenge. Music is the international language and everyone has someone in their family that would love a copy of a great new album or tickets to see their favorite artist. Well guess what, you are in luck. Many years ago, the folks in the music business discovered that if you release new music around the holidays, people will buy it. Imagine that, they really must be geniuses to have figured that out. If there’s a music lover on your gift list, here’s some new music they may like. Country fans will want to pick up Pistol Annies, the supergroup of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, new album Interstate Gospel. Rosanne Cash has a new CD out now called She Remembers Everything. Jason Isbell has Live at the Ryman, Cody Jinks released his latest album titled Lifers and for those classic rockers in the bunch, Guns ‘N Roses released a special deluxe edition of the Appetite for Destruction. Book lovers that also enjoy music can get new autobiographies by Roger Daltry of The Who, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, an updated biography from Tina Turner and an in-depth look at Eric Clapton appropriately titled Slowhand.

Concert Ticket Stocking Stuffers

Concert tickets always make good stocking stuffers and there are a lot of musicians hitting the road next year. Just today it was announced that Hootie and the Blowfish will reunite to promote the 25th anniversary of their 1994 Cracked Rear View album. They are currently writing songs for a new album to be released next spring. Tickets for the tour go on-sale tomorrow at all Ticketmaster locations and on-line at Ticketmaster.com. The 44 city tour will make three stops in Texas on June 13 in Austin, June 14 in Houston and June 15 in Dallas. Hard rockers Judas Priest will bring their Firepower Tour to Texas with two shows at Austin’s Moody Theater on May 28 and 29. Following on the heals of the recent Queen movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, the British rock band will hit the road with new singer Adam Lambert. They will be in Dallas on July 23 and Houston on July 24. Bob Seger will embark on his final tour in 2019 with a March 7 stop in Austin, March 9 in Dallas and will perform his last concert ever on May 2 at The Woodlands Pavilion. I always figured Seger would say goodbye where it all started for him, in his hometown of Detroit, MI.
