Valentine’s Day in New Braunfels

Today is Valentine’s Day and several venues in town have planned special concerts to help celebrate this day of love. Going alphabetically we can start with the Brauntex Theatre and a rare show with Connie Smith and her husband Marty Stuart. These two lovebirds rarely perform together outside of Nashville but each year they come to town on Valentine’s Day. Today marks their 5th year of performing together in our fair city and will also be the first time Connie is bringing her full band, the Sundowners. In the past she just used Marty’s band, the Superlatives. Next up is Gruene Hall with Dale Watson and his Lone Stars playing tonight for couples that want to two-step across the dancefloor. Tickets for his show are only $10 and will feature some of the best traditional country music this side of the Rio Grande. Last but certainly not least is Seekatz Opera House and their supper and a song with Kinky Friedman. Easily one of the most colorful characters to ever call Texas home, Friedman wears many hats. A former Governor candidate, owner of a dog rescue ranch near Kerrville, best selling author and critically acclaimed musician. His sense of humor is contagious and you can bet he’ll have some great stories to tell tonight. Krause’s Café is catering the meal and selling the tickets so go to KrausesCafe.com if you’d like to attend.

Ray Wylie Hubbard Unplugged

Ever wonder how Ray Wylie Hubbard came up with the idea for his hit songs like Redneck Mother or Snake Farm? Well on Friday night you can learn the answer to this question and more when he performs the first of three special Unplugged concerts at the Brauntex Theatre.

Hubbard will be featured in the first show, Paul Thorn will be the second artist in April and Ruthie Foster will finish the series in May. The series will showcase artists in an acoustic storytelling setting, talking about their songs and singing them. The Unplugged series will feature three shows a year, with the next round scheduled for February 2020. Tickets are available at Brauntex.org.

Gary P. Nunn to Retire

Speaking of storytellers, few do it better than Gary P. Nunn, the 73 year old songwriting icon who just announced his retirement from touring. Nunn was born in Oklahoma but got to Texas as fast as he could, which happen to be his 6th grade school year. Growing up in Brownfield, Texas he started his first band in the 7th grade. After high school he attended Texas Tech and also South Plains University before moving to Austin and enrolling at University of Texas. It was the late 60’s and before long Nunn was caught up in the thriving music scene that was putting Austin on the map as a major player in the music business. Gary played bass in bands fronted by Michael Martin Murphey, Jerry Jeff Walker and Willie Nelson before joining the Lost Gonzo Band. With Jerry Jeff as their front man, they took Texas and the world by storm. One can only imagine the stories he can tell from his years with Walker. The band broke up in 1980 and Nunn started his solo career. His many hit songs include London Homesick Blues, What I Like About Texas, Guadalupe Days and The Last Thing I Needed. I once did a phone interview with Gary and he pulled over on the side of farm road so he wouldn’t lose his cell phone connection. For the next half hour he told me the story of writing London Homesick Blues in a cold London hotel room. He claims he never wrote the lyrics down on paper, choosing to store them in his memory. By his own estimation, he’s driven over two million miles across Texas and at 73 years old, he is ready to slow down. He and wife Ruth want to travel, snow ski, ride horses, play golf and visit friends and family. I think he’s earned some time to kick back and relax for a while. Check out his remaining tour dates at GaryPNunn.com.

Live Music Around Town

As I write this paragraph, I see the sun peeking through the clouds and it is certainly a welcome sight. Just a few more weeks and February will be behind us and another winter will be in our rear view mirror. The live music is starting to pick back up in town, starting tonight with HalleyAnna Finlay at Riley’s Tavern. On Friday you can catch Soul Sessions at Phoenix Saloon with guest Curtis Lee. The mighty Joe Ely Band will be at River Road Icehouse on Saturday. On Sunday there’s a huge benefit concert for Sissy Lasley at Krause’s Café at 3pm. There’s nothing better than Bret Graham on Monday nights at Gruene Hall. Tuesday nights belong to Aaron Stephens at the Black Whale Pub. Walther Wednesday’s at Freiheit Country Store with Zack Walther and Matt Briggs is a fantastic family friendly event that I highly recommend.
