Music News – Jan. 10, 2019

Now that 2019 is here and everyone is back at work, local venues are quickly filling up their spring and summer schedules. New shows are being added all over town on a daily basis. It’s a good idea to subscribe to each venue’s email list or follow their Facebook page so you can be notified as soon as upcoming shows are announced. Looking ahead at upcoming concerts, we will start with our biggest venue, Whitewater Amphitheatre. Their calendar is filling up quickly with shows by Willie Nelson, Avett Brothers, Dwight Yoakam and Cody Johnson. At press time they just added Turnpike Troubadours and Robert Earl Keen to the calendar and tickets go on-sale at 10am Friday morning. River Road Icehouse has Corb Lund, Joe Ely, John Baumann, Brandon Rhyder and Sean McConnell. Gruene Hall has Amanda Shires, Colter Wall, Dale Watson, LeAnn Rimes and Kurt Vile, just to name a few. Krause Café has a special Valentine’s Day dinner and show by Kinky Friedman. The Brauntex Theatre has Yesenia McNett, Marty Stuart, Connie Smith, Storm Large, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Bruce Robison, Paul Thorn and Ruthie Foster. As you can see, 2019 is starting out to be another busy year for live music. As I often say, we are truly blessed to live in a city that has so much entertainment to offer.

Gruene Hall

Speaking of live music, Gruene Hall has a full schedule this weekend starting tonight with piano player Lucas Jack, coming to town all the way from St. Louis, MO. Lucas comes to Texas about twice a year and makes the rounds at several area venues. Micky & the Motorcars headline a show on Saturday night with Dustin Schaefer opening. The South Austin Moonlighters play the 4pm slot on Sunday. If you’re not familiar with this band, you should be, they are fantastic. Of course Bret Graham’s regular Monday night shows are legendary, always playing to a packed house. The Georges are another talented local band that do a lot of Wednesday night shows at the hall. Check out their full schedule at GrueneHall.com.

Phoenix Saloon

The Phoenix Saloon has two exciting nights of music on tap this weekend starting Friday night with Hunter Road Trio. They bring a mix of southern and classic rock to the stage with a healthy mix of blues and Americana thrown in for good measure. Saturday night features Ebrolution, a collaboration of Jorge Gallegos and Dave Perez from Broseph plus Haydin Vitera for a night of tasteful tunes and exciting rock & roll. There’s no cover charge either night so check them out if you happen to be downtown. There are many more shows listed on their website at ThePhoenixSaloon.com so check them out.

Concert Ticket Prices on the Rise

As we all know, concert ticket prices are continuing to rise each year. Artists no longer make any money on selling CD’s and streaming services like Pandora and Spotify play mere pennies to the artist to play their music. So their primary source of income is now their live concerts. Pollstar Magazine, the industry bible of live concerts, just released their year-end tour reports. The top tour of 2018 was Ed Sheeran, who played 94 shows in 53 cities and grossed $4,860,482. Coming in at number two was Taylor Swift’s $345 million gross followed by Beyonce & Jay Z grossing $254 million. Rock band U2 earned $736 million on their 360 Live tour but it took them two years to reach that amount. Pollstar Magazine was started by rock star Jon Bon Jovi’s grandfather many years ago and reports the money earned by live concerts all across America. They have their finger on the pulse of the live concert industry and predict that rising concert ticket prices are here to stay. While it’s very convenient to get our music on our electronic devices at a low cost, we fans still pay the price when we go see our favorite artist in concert.

Weekly Concert Calendar

Each week we try to list the schedules from as many live music venues as possible. It’s a very time consuming process to compile the list each week and we use the venue websites or Facebook pages to get the information. So we can only be as accurate as the information they post online. There’s no charge for this weekly listing and hopefully it’s helpful to the fans plus the venues. Obviously, we can’t list every venue and many venues don’t keep their sites up to date, so it is a weekly challenge. If you would like your schedule listed here, send me an email, I’ll be happy to include it for you.
