Music News – June 21, 2018

The first time I heard Allan Goodman on the radio, it was his song “25 to Life.” It’s a semi-humorous song about serving time in prison rather than getting married. Allan was like that, he had a wicked sense of humor. Allan came to New Braunfels from his home in California, determined to make a living in the music business. Local musician Matt Briggs remembers those days well. “Allan came here to work,” recalled Briggs. “He was always prepared. He could play anything from country to heavy metal and he knew hundreds of songs.” Allan passed away in 2014 from complications from cancer. It was a devastating loss for our local music scene. Almost immediately, his brother in law Corey Dement founded Goodfest in his honor to raise money to cover his medical costs. Corey hosted several Goodfest’s over the next several years, raising a lot of money for cancer patients. This Sunday will be the final Goodfest and local resident Jannine Taylor, a cancer patient here in New Braunfels, will be the recipient of the proceeds. Her son is Lucas Taylor, a local musician that fronts the Highway Hypnosis band, plus hosts the open mic stage at the Phoenix Saloon on Sunday nights. The final Goodfest will be held this Sunday at Billy’s Ice starting at 2pm and will feature Copper Chief, Zack Walther Band, Clever Name Band, Logun Timberlake, Tony Taylor, Austin Gilliam, Matt Easley, Shawn Hart, Statesboro’s Midnight Accident and the Original Allan Goodman Band from California. They were Allan’s band on the west coast and they fly out each year to play at Goodfest. They will also do a warm up gig on Friday night at Tavern in the Gruene if you’d like a sneak peek of what they sound like. Head out to Billy’s Ice on Sunday afternoon for a very worthy event to help out one of our own. For more info, check out the Facebook page at AGgoodfest.

A few months ago I talked about a talented young singer songwriter Mason Lively that was introduced to me by some mutual friends. He recently released his debut album, Stronger Ties, and has been building a solid fan base with each live performance. I decided to check in with Lively to see how things were going. Since we last spoke, Mason has been surrounding himself with a talented group of people to help him with his career. His publicity is now handled by Brandy Reed at RPR Media; his management is under the control of War Bird Management. Local musician Stewart Mann started this management company a few years ago with his friend Trey Newman. The biggest news Mason had to share was his recent signing with the William Morris Endeavor booking agency, one of the oldest most prestigious agencies in the world. They have offices all over the world in every major city and at one time listed John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra as clients. They’ve secured some good opening gigs for Mason which will get his music in front of more people. He’s started writing songs for his second album but he’s still pushing the debut CD. His show on Friday night at Cheatham Street Warehouse will be a full band set starting about 9pm with Canaan Bryce opening. For info on Mason’s show and many others, go to CheathamStreet.com.

Kelly Willis has a new album out now and she’s hosting her CD release party at Gruene Hall on Friday night. It’s been over a decade since we’ve heard new music from Kelly, so her Back Being Blue album is a welcome surprise. Willis is one of the most respected singer songwriters on the Texas music scene so it will be a true pleasure to hear some fresh tunes from her. The ten track album contains some of the strongest work of her career. Modern World and I’m A Lover, Not A Fighter are two instant standouts. Get you tickets now at GrueneHall.com and be sure to pick up a copy of her new CD at the show.

A few weeks back I mentioned that Oma Gruene’s Secret Garten had finally re-opened in their new location at 1407 Gruene Road. This weekend they want to invite everyone to come out and see their new facility. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all and chill with a glass of wine or a cold beer. They are still in Gruene, located behind Rockin’ R River Rides on the banks of the beautiful Guadalupe River. The kitchen is housed in a groovy old airstream trailer that has beer, wine and sandwiches. There’s plenty of seating, a volleyball court, shady cypress trees and plenty of breeze. Parking is always free and they are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5pm to midnight. They will host all the most popular local bands each night starting at 6. Check out all the details on their website at Omalovesyou.com. On Friday they have Highway Hypnosis, on Saturday its guitar wizard Chris Duarte followed on Sunday by singer songwriter James Pardo.
