Music News – June 27, 2019

It’s no secret that Blue Water Highway is one of my favorite bands on the Texas music scene. They were formed in Lake Jackson by two high school friends, Zack Kibodeaux and Greg Essington. To round out the three point harmonies they recruited friend Catherine Clarke. Zack and Catherine are actually classically trained opera singers, so they were used to singing together. Bassist Kyle Smith and drummer Jared Wilson came onboard and the lineup was complete. They took their name from the highway that connects their hometown of Lake Jackson with Galveston. I discovered the band purely by accident. I happened to be present when they were filming the video for Medicine Man, their first single. I was instantly a fan and have followed their career path ever since. Their latest album is Heartbreak City Stripped, an acoustic version of their second CD. The songwriting and vocals on these songs are simply fantastic. If the Eagles and the Band were to join forces they would sound like Blue Water Highway. Yes, they are that good. You can see for yourself tonight when they make their debut performance at Krause’s Café. Tickets are available at KrausesCafe.com or at the door. The doors open at 6pm and the band starts at 8pm.

Whitewater Amphitheater has a sold-out show on tap for Saturday night with Paul Cauthen opening for Midland. Raised in east Texas, Cauthen cut his teeth with fellow singer David Beck, who he met while living in San Marcos. Together they formed a duo called Beck & Cauthen but received a warning letter from the attorneys for rock singer Beck. They changed their name to Sons of Fathers and released their debut album in 2011. In 2013 they issued Burning Days but after a short tour they decided to seek solo careers. David formed his band Tejano Weekend and Cauthen released My Gospel in 2016. It quickly appeared on several critics lists as the best album of the year. Suddenly Paul was in demand all over the world and he toured heavily to promote the album. In June of 2018 he released an EP of seven songs called Have Mercy. It was meant to buy him some time before recording his next full length album. That new album, titled Room 41, was recorded during a period spent living out of a suitcase in room 41 at the Belmont Hotel in Dallas. He admits to living a destructive life during the making of the new album. Mixing drugs and other vices landed him in the hospital on several occasions. Once the songs were written and recorded, the pressure was off and he seemed to settle into a healthier place. Set for release in early September, the 10 track CD continues the sound Paul discovered on his first album. It’s an eccentric and very personal collection of songs done in a style that sets him apart from his peers on the Texas music scene. Hopefully you have tickets for the show on Saturday and can catch Paul live on stage. I promise you it will be a show you won’t soon forget.

Lonestar Floathouse is one of my favorite stops on River Road. Not only do they have great burgers and lots of cold drinks, they also feature a Sunday Serenade each Sunday afternoon during the summer months. Usually it’s just one singer songwriter doing an acoustic set for a few hours on their back patio deck. However, this Sunday they will host Wreaths on the River Benefit concert with a long list of performers starting at noon. The list includes Lucas Taylor’s Highway Hypnosis, Taylor Long, JJ Garrett, Chad Boyd, Hunter Road Trio, Logun Timberlake, Skylark Hamilton, Garrett Mann and Bo Brumble. Check out their website at Lonestarfloathouse.com for a complete Sunday Serenade schedule.

There’s a lot of live music going on this weekend, starting tonight with country singer Lorrie Morgan celebrating her birthday at the Brauntex Theatre. On Friday, the amazing Larry Joe Taylor takes the stage at Gruene Hall. He’s the Texas version of Jimmy Buffett and his shows are so much fun. On Saturday night, Knotty Grove will be blasting out some tasty classic rock at Tavern in the Gruene. On Sunday you can catch Alli Mattice at Villa at Gruene. Grouchy Like Riley has a funny name and is a super fun band so check them out on Monday at Gruene Hall. The Dirty River Dixie Band will be on Krause’s Café stage on Tuesday night and if you’ve never seen them, you really need to. For Wednesday, July 3, I highly recommend these two shows, Dale Watson & His Lone Stars at Gruene Hall and the Grand Ol’ American Radio Show at the Brauntex Theatre. Check out the full concert calendar for all of your live music needs.
