Music News – March 28, 2019

I first heard Austin Meade sing a year ago during an all-star tribute to Tom Petty shortly after Petty’s untimely death. I was very impressed with his performance and made a mental note to keep an eye on his career. Fast forward to a few months ago when I received a copy of his latest album titled Waves in the mail. The front cover photo could have been an outtake from Bro Seger’s 1978 Stranger in Town album. Meade has that 70’s rock star look and I was blown away by the new collection of songs. Deftly combining his Americana roots with classic rock puts Austin in a class all by himself. Few young artists are trying this style, much less able to do it successfully. Several of the cuts on this CD are in heavy rotation on KNBT 92.1 FM so I’m sure you’ve heard his music by now. If not, you need to do so immediately. The best way to get the new album is to catch his show on Friday night at Freiheit Country Store. Their website doesn’t mention an opening act so get their early and be sure to buy his new album. Tickets are available now at FreiheitCountryStore.net

Floores Country Store is the place to be this weekend with two nights of the Randy Rogers Band. When they play the historic venue in Helotes, people flock from miles around to witness the event. Rogers loves this place and even recorded a live album at Floores a few years ago called Homemade Tamales. His new album, titled Hellbent, is due out April 26 and is available now for pre-order. You can hear the first single, Crazy People, on Randy’s website. William Clark Green will open the show on Friday night and Casey Donahew will handle the Saturday night opening slot. Green and Donahew are both headlining acts on their own so this is like getting two major shows in one night for the same price. It’s the perfect way to kick off springtime and hopefully say goodbye to old man winter for about seven or eight months. This show will definitely sell out so get your tickets now at LiveAtFloores.com.

Billy’s Ice is under new ownership and since Bob Wilson purchased the iconic local venue he’s been ramping up his live music schedule. He’s got live music booked for the entire weekend featuring Colton O’Neill tonight, Jamie Talbert on Friday, Nautical Nation on Saturday and Tony Taylor and Geoff Hill closing things out on Sunday. It’s nice to see live music making such a strong comeback at Billy’s Ice. It has been the home for many fantastic live shows in the past plus literally hundreds of local benefits. I predict that the tradition will continue and I’m happy to see them doing well. Check them out on Facebook and on their website at BillysIce.com.

Krause’s Café in downtown New Braunfels has a triple threat weekend on tap. Friday night brings Zack Walther and his band to the Krause’s stage. I think Zack is working on a new album and hopefully it will be out soon. It’s always a good day when there’s new Zack Walther music. Hipsonic will be on hand Saturday to rock the crowd with their unique blend of rock and pop. Blues guitar ace Ruben V will play an early gig at 3pm on Sunday to finish out the weekend. If you’ve never seen Ruben V you need to remedy that situation right away. This guy has the chops and the voice to play anything he wants. This is Ruben’s makeup show from a few months back when old man winter came calling with some really cold weather and forced him to cancel. Check out their full music schedule at KrausesCafe.com that also includes some cool polka bands on Wednesday nights.

Rosie Flores has been one of my favorite guitar players since the first time I heard her debut album back in 1987. Born in San Antonio and raised in San Diego, Flores formed her first band called Penelope’s Children while still in high school in California. Flores would go on to form several more bands, tour with Wanda Jackson and even join Asleep at the Wheel for a few years. Her latest album is called A Simple Case of the Blues and it was produced by Austin’s ace guitarist Charlie Sexton with help from Kenny Vaughn, Marty Stuart’s guitar player. The album spotlights her incredible guitar playing and amazing voice. You can catch Rosie at Riley’s Tavern on Saturday night with a mere $10 cover charge. Check out the other great acts coming to Riley’s at RileysTavern.com.
