Alex Meixner Plays Krause’s Cafe

Memorial Day weekend is always the official kick-off of the spring and summer season in our city. What better way to get the party started than with the wild man of polka, Alex Meixner. He’s easily one of the most popular polka artists in America. He and his ace band tour all over the world, playing for sold out crowds on a nightly basis. His popularity is based on his incredible live shows and his ability to mix traditional polka music with modern rock, pop and country tunes. Tonight he begins a three night stand at Krause’s Café for their annual Maifest, which is a German tradition that marks the start of spring. Alex’s latest album, appropriately titled Make Some Noise, will be on-sale at the shows along with lots of other cool memorabilia. Reserved tables that seat eight along with general admission tickets are available at KrausesCafe.com.

Cody Johnson & Friends at Whitewater Amphitheater

The other big show this holiday weekend is out at Whitewater Amphitheater featuring Cody Johnson. This young country singer has forged an amazing career by sticking to his roots and performing his music as he sees fit. Johnson got his start as a bull rider and prison guard in Huntsville while writing songs on the side. As his talent progressed, so did his audience. Cody’s career path closely follows that of George Strait. Both have remained true to the cowboy way of life and to traditional country music. You don’t read about either artist in the tabloids, they are still married to their high school sweethearts and they are both traditional country singers. Johnson’s latest album, Ain’t Nothin To It, is his first major label release. He partnered with Warner Brothers Records but retained complete control over every decision about his music. It’s the same battle plan Strait used back in the early 80’s and things worked out just fine for King George. In fact, Cody will be opening for Strait in August at Gillette Stadium in Boston. Johnson is playing two nights at Whitewater. The Saturday show is sold out but at press time a few tickets were still available for the Sunday night show. Kevin Fowler and Randall King will be Cody’s special guests on Sunday night. For tickets and show information, go to Whitewaterrocks.com.

Brauntex Theatre Hosts Free Army Band Concert

Memorial Day means so much more than the official start of summer. It is a federal holiday for remembering and honoring persons who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. So what better way to celebrate this very special day than with a free concert by the 36th Infantry Division Band? This local Army band will perform a patriotic concert at 2pm on Sunday May 26 at the Brauntex Theatre. Cemex is sponsoring this concert so be sure to thank them for helping make this show free to everyone. Doors open at 1pm and the public are invited to attend this free concert saluting our great country and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
