Music News – Oct. 18, 2018

After an incredible season of first rate concerts, Whitewater Amphitheater will host their final show of the year on Saturday night. It’s a triple bill featuring newcomer Lauren Alaina, plus Dustin Lynch and Cole Swindell on what’s called the Reason to Drink Another Tour. Cole is on the road to promote his latest album All Of It. Lynch recently became the newest member of the Grand Ol’ Opry and is touring to promote his Good Girl album. Lauren was the runner up on the 10th season of American Idol and is currently supporting her Road Less Travelled album. All three artists have been touring all summer on one of the most popular treks of the year. It’s a fitting way for Whitewater to end their season. This year they hosted sold out concerts by Willie Nelson, Randy Rogers, Josh Abbott, Leon Bridges, Whiskey Myers, Billy Currington, Cody Jinks, Kaleo, Cody Johnson and John Fogerty. I can’t wait for what they have lined up for next year. See for tickets to Saturday night’s show.

Tribute Shows at Brauntex Theatre

After taking a break for the summer, the Local Live series returns tonight to the Brauntex Theatre with Jay Bleu paying tribute to the music of John Mayer. This local band includes lead singer and guitarist Jay Wimberley, plus Andrae Blissett on drums, Mark Greenberg on bass, Dan Holmes on keys, Aris Pouncey on guitar and special guest Alli Mattice Ramsey on vocals. They have 17 songs in the set list including full band, acoustic and trio sets, just like Mayer did on his recent tour. A few cool changes have been made to the Local Live series this year. Now all seats are reserved instead of the general admission method used in the past. Ticket prices to these shows have been raised slightly to cover the extra administrative costs of reserved seats. Now you can grab a bite to eat and not have to worry about getting there an hour early to save your seat. Come back on Saturday night when local promoter Eddie Luna brings his Rocktober Fest to the Brauntex stage with KISS Alike and Def Leggend. They will be doing tributes to KISS and Def Leppard respectively. Both bands are extremely good at performing and recreating the look and music of both bands. Get tickets now at

Oktoberfest at Anhalt Hall

Saturday brings Oktoberfest to the historic Anhalt Hall, with the festivities starting at noon. Music during the day will be provided by Rennie Guenther & the Happy Travelers, followed by the Ennis Czech Boys Polka Band and ending with Justin Trevino when he takes the stage at 7pm. Admission is just $7 if you come before 3pm and $15 after that. A delicious meal of pot roast and sausage will be available for $10. Anhalt Hall didn’t host many events this summer because the weather was so hot but they are back in action now. See for more info on Oktoberfest plus the upcoming events.

Dave Fenley Returns

If you missed Dave Fenley’s sold-out show at Billy’s Ice last week, you can catch him on Friday night when he opens for Tracy Byrd at Conway’s Dancehall. Fenley is a Lufkin boy and made the rounds in our area for a few years before moving to Nashville. Once he landed in Music City he quickly secured opening spots for Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley and Dwight Yoakam, just to name a few. He appeared on America’s Got Talent and is currently on The Voice where he was picked to be on Blake Shelton’s team. With a powerful voice and a big personality, Fenley is a crowd favorite on any stage he occupies. When he’s not on the road or on TV, Dave spends his time in Nashville writing songs. You can keep up with his career at

Gruene Hall

Gruene Hall has a triple shot of talent this weekend, starting tonight with Dennis Quaid & the Sharks. Quaid is one of a handful of actors that can actually pull off a second career as a musician. He and his band specialize in a fun mix of blues, rock and country and they love playing at the hall. The Reed Brothers will open the show so get there early so you can enjoy their set as well. Friday night brings Shooter Jennings back to town for his CD release party for his new album titled Shooter. On Saturday, bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs brings his band, Kentucky Thunder back to Gruene Hall. Randy Collier & Grassland will open so it will be a full night of bluegrass music. Get tickets to all these shows and more at

A Star Is Born

Speaking of actors that can sing, I highly recommend the new version of A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Cooper took guitar and singing lessons for a year before filming began. Willie Nelson’s son Lucas plays his band leader in the movie and helped Cooper write many songs on the soundtrack. Cooper says he patterned many of his mannerisms after Lucas and took guitar lessons from him as well. The soundtrack to the new hit movie is currently perched at the top of the charts and the movie is generating talk of Oscar nominees for the two leading actors. It’s the third remake of the original 1937 movie, with a remakes done in 1954, 1976 and now in 2018.
