Music News – Oct. 9, 2014

Even though it’s still 90 degrees outside, we are in the fall concert season so a lot of festivals and music fests are starting to pop up on the schedule. Obviously the main one in our area is the Gruene Music & Wine Fest, which kicks off tonight featuring Uncle Lucius. If you aren’t familiar with them, you certainly owe it to yourself to get their latest CD, ‘And You Are Me’ and go check them out at Gruene Hall tonight. They are currently in the studio working on a new album so I’m sure they will be previewing some new songs tonight. Tickets are still available online or you can get them at the door. Friday night features the Great Guitar Auction and two performances by Robert Earl Keen. Both shows are sold out so hopefully you bought your tickets early. Saturday features wine tasting plus live music supplied by Sol Patch, The Georges, Wood & Wire and Red Dirt Rangers. Cory Morrow will headline the show at the hall on Saturday night. Sunday is the all-day music fest featuring such artists as Jason Boland, Kelly Mickwee Band, Shinyribs, Midnight River Choir, Tom Gillam and Zack Walther. Proceeds from this event go to benefit the United Way of Comal County. All info can be found at gruenehall.com, so come out and support a worthy cause and enjoy some amazing music.

Just up the road in Austin, the second weekend of the ACL Festival. Started several years ago by the folks at Austin City Limits TV series, it has become one of the major festivals in America in just a few years. A couple of years ago it expanded from one weekend in October to two weekends. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the festival will feature a very diverse lineup of musical talent. A quick glance at the schedule reveals Blackberry Smoke, Paolo Nutini, Jimmy Cliff, Sam Smith, Beck, Outkast, Avett Brothers, Lana Del Rey, Skrillex, Eminem, Jenny Lewis, Chromeo, Lorde, Turnpike Troubadours and Pearl Jam. That’s only a few of the names so go to their website at aclfestival.com to see all the acts plus a schedule of appearance times.

Waylon Jennings widow, Jessi Colter, recently sold some of his personal items in an auction at her home in Mesa, Arizona. Two items that garnered the biggest price and interest were braids of Willie Nelson’s hair and Buddy Holly’s motorcycle. In 1980, Nelson cut off his signature braids of hair and gave them to Waylon to celebrate Jennings one year anniversary of sobriety. Back then, Willie’s hair was still red, so that made them very rare and evidently very expensive. The winning bidder got them for $37,000. Also sold was Buddy Holly’s Ariel Cyclone motorcycle to a major fan for $450,000. Waylon was Holly’s bass player on the night Buddy was killed in a plane crash. Waylon was supposed to be on the plane but instead gave up his seat to J.P. ‘Big Bopper’ Richardson. Holly’s family gave Waylon the motorcycle several years after his death. Waylon passed away in 2002 at the age of 64 from complications of diabetes.

Two of my favorite bands are at River Road Ice House this weekend, starting tonight night with Sam Riggs & the Night People. His ‘Outrun The Sun’ CD has been in my CD player for over a month now. There are some new releases I also love and I’ll talk about those next week. On Friday night, Johnny Cooper opens for the Mike McClure Band. Cooper is a super talented young singer songwriter and McClure is simply one of the most talented musicians around. He writes, sings, plays a killer guitar and also produces his albums as well as many more by his fellow Americana Red Dirt musicians. As soon as you finish reading today’s paper, check out Mike’s blog on his website, mikemcclureband.com, it’s hilarious. While there, order his latest CD, ’50 Billion’ and any others you don’t have. McClure isn’t capable of making a bad album, they all rock, trust me on this.
