Music News – Sept. 12, 2019

The music community here in our city has always been a generous group. They are often the first to step up and donate their time and money to help one of their own. This Sunday the Phoenix Saloon is hosting a very special benefit concert to help local guitar player Junior Nash. For years he’s been playing around our town, often at happy hour gigs at 5pm then slipping across town to play a late night set with friends. Recently Nash was diagnosed with stage four cancer and needs our help in fighting this battle. The lineup of talent that has signed up to play on Sunday is very impressive. The music starts at 2pm and will feature performances by Cody Canada, Lucas Taylor, Reed Brothers, Jorge Gallegos, Manzy Lowry, Silvercloud, Brushy Creek Boys, Troy Stone, Alli Mattice Band, BJ Thibodeaux, Nate Guthrie, Shaker Hymns, Jade Marie Patek, Mike Ethan Messick, Jeff Willis, Michael Precise and Soul Sessions. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. There is also a GoFundMe account setup to accept online donations. Go to the homepage and search for Junior Nash. There will also be auction items so get there early to place your bids. If you need more information, go to

Lucas Taylor & Austin Gilliam Join Forces

With a name like Thunderchicken you have to be a tough band, just like Johnny Cash’s Boy Named Sue. All jokes aside, this exciting new group features local guitar slingers Lucas Taylor and Austin Gilliam in what is surely a guitar players dream come true. It makes perfect sense that the show is taking place on Friday the 13th, the night for wild and crazy events to take place. If you follow these two talented musicians, you know they both are in several different bands around town. Taylor hosts Sunday night jam sessions and fronts his band Highway Hypnosis. Gilliam has done time with Scott Wiggins, Matt King, Brandon Jenkins and recently Johnny Chops & the Razors. The music starts at 9pm for this free show at the Phoenix Saloon.

Local Live Series Announces Lineup

The Brauntex Theatre recently announced the lineup for the upcoming Local Live series. This popular series invites local bands to pay tribute to their favorite band or artist. Soul Sessions kick things off in October with their salute to the music of Motown. The music of Grand Funk Railroad will be highlighted in November when the super group Closer to Home takes the stage. Yesenia McNett will be the featured vocalist for this show. Stewart Mann & Statesboro Revue were the first band back in 2012 to perform in this series so it’s only fitting that they be included this year. You can catch their special tribute to Southern Rock in January. March will have the super talented Reed Brothers doing their tribute to ZZ Top. In April, Monte Good and the Honky Tonk Heroes will salute the Bakersfield Sound, which includes the music of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam and more California country music stars.

Midnight River Choir & Damn Quails Coming to Town

Not every venue in town books major touring acts; many fill their live music schedule with local acts. So when these venues do book a bigger name act they can use your support to buy tickets and go to the show. This week please think about seeing the Damn Quails at Villa at Gruene and Midnight River Choir at the Happy Cow. Up first is the Happy Cow located on FM 1102 and their big show on Saturday night. Shaker Hymns will open for Midnight River Choir and tickets are available at On Sunday the music kicks off at 2pm at Villa At Gruene with Rio Tripiano and Logun Timberlake opening for the Damn Quails. Keeping Track of Live Music

One of the questions I get asked the most by music fans is how is the best way to keep up with all the live music in our area? The short answer is to check out the concert calendar in our Thursday paper. However, this listing only works if the local venues keep their schedules up to date and easy to find. The easy to find part is the key. Nothing is more frustrating than to go to a venue website and find that their live music calendar hasn’t been updated in several weeks or even months. Often times a website will direct you to their Facebook page and that page hasn’t been updated either. So all we can do is try to find the information and list it on our concert page. If it’s wrong on their website it will be wrong in our concert listing. There isn’t enough time to verify every single listing we print so it’s always best to call the venue if you need more information or to confirm that your favorite artist will be playing at the posted time. Remember that posted times usually indicate the time that doors open, not the actual time the music will start. Most acts normally start an hour after doors open but each venue is different, so always double check before purchasing tickets.
